Our Chapter

Last updated - December 26, 2016

Founded in 1992, Siskiyou Decorative Artists is a group of decorative artists and a chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters. We are in Southern Oregon, meeting at the Live Oak Grange Hall in Rogue River, Oregon.

Decorative painting is defined as a “method” of painting designs on any object, to decorate or make a picture. Application follows an orderly procedure and a pattern is customarily used to apply the design. Because of the systematic methods employed, contemporary decorative painting is a highly teachable art form. The patterns or freehand designs allow a high degree of success without academic training or inherent drawing ability. Approached with creativity, discipline and craftsmanship, contemporary decorative painting offers opportunities for artistic self-expression and creative satisfaction.

It is a diverse art form that utilizes a variety of techniques and media to decorate both functional and non-functional surfaces. The scope of contemporary decorative painting is boundless. Styles and techniques of the past are incorporated into the trends and materials of the present, while developing the decorative art heritage of the future. In recent years, “decorative painting” has replaced the older “tole painting” term. Decorative painting uses various mediums - acrylic, oils, watercolors and colored pencils, and is done on a variety of surfaces such as wood, canvas, paper, glass, fabric, tin/metal and more.

We at SDA, come together to build friendships and share the love of our craft. Our chapter wishes to stimulate an interest in decorative painting and to recognize diversity of and excellence of the art form.

We have monthly meetings in a variety of mediums and at various skill levels. If you are interested in decorative painting, please check out our website. We urge anyone who is interested in decorative painting to join us in developing their talents or we can give you contact information for lessons.
